The Beijing Olympics were in many ways a turning point for China. In Beijing, an unprecedented building boom turned the hutongs or courtyard homes into rubble to make way for hotels, apartment complexes and more. Some hutongs were rebuilt or saved for cultural preservation but the majority were torn down and replaced, forcing many of the residents to take apartments outside of the city, the first time in generations that many of them had to leave their hutong neighborhoods, community and more.
